ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Answers all emergency 911 calls. Interacts with caller to determine what type of emergency occurred, where and when it occurred, and if the caller needs immediate assistance. Makes assessment as to whether police, fire and or emergency medical service personnel need to be dispatched to the location, while the caller is still on the line. If the situation is deemed a critical emergency the appropriate personnel are dispatched immediately. Maintains contact with caller as long as possible and/or necessary to obtain additional information to relay to responding emergency personnel and to assist caller in coping with the emergency. In the event of a medical emergency, interacts with caller to obtain medical information that can be relayed to responding personnel and to give caller emergency medical dispatch instructions until emergency medical personnel reach the scene. If the situation is not deemed an immediate emergency, explains why an immediate response will not occur.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and previous experience.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
(A) Ability to remain calm and rational and communicate effectively in highly stressful situations involving callers that are traumatized and/or irrational while simultaneously performing critical text and data entry tasks.
(B) Ability to learn and recall accurately, under stress, numerous local, state and federal policies and procedures covering use of secure law enforcement databases.
(C) Ability to learn and recall accurately, under stress, street locations in the city limits and county road locations throughout the county.
(D) Ability to obtain working knowledge of NCIC, NMLETS, CJIS, CAD Manual, City Ordinances, and Fire Resource Manuals
(E) Ability to multi-task verbal communication, data/text entry and research duties, and responsibilities on a regular basis.
(F) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with police staff and the general public.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS
(A) Valid state issued driver’s license and no felony convictions or other disqualifying criminal history.
(B) Desired residency should be within 10 miles of the city limits due to the emergency nature of the position, but residency can be authorized up to 45 miles from the police facility, providing such residency does not cause attendance or response time problems.
(C) Must possess NM Police Radio Dispatcher Certification, National Crime Information Certification, and Emergency Medical Dispatching Certification
